Bad luck for Gary Collins who was leading in the late stages and had to
be relieved due to fatigue.

TNN televised this race, promoting a busy race weekend at Mesa Marin
that also included USAC and late model races as the largest oval track
racing weekend in the western United States. With Fontana not off the
drawing board yet in this era and Ontario long gone maybe that would be
accurate for California but with the NASCAR Winston Cup and CART series
both making regular stops at Phoenix it's hard to say it was the biggest
in the west overall.

Butch Gilliland earns the first of his 15 Winston West pole positions
and converts it into a top-5 run.

Bill Sedgwick led this one early but his chances for a win ended with an
early crash. The #75 Lumina surived but severe steering damage sent him
behind the wall for extended repairs, ruining his day.
