It was on a Sunday, the day before the cup series ran at Atlanta because their race was postponed a week because of snow. Waltrip,Shrader & Earnhardt had other drivers qualify their cars. Neil Bonnett qualified Dale's car. Waltrip stayed out and a caution came out about halfway thru the race a got the field a lap down. He won it easy. 5. Cup drivers such as DW and Schrader were driving for ARCA for the purposes of this race. 8. Jones, Parnelli's son and PJ's brother, never led the race as Loy Allen Jr. passed him before they even got to turn 1 (Allen actually led at the line when they got the green) and checked out. Allen dominated early but both he and Jones were on the sidelines by lap 60. Jimmy Hensley qualified Ken Schrader's #52 Lumina for this race. Because other drivers qualifed their Chevys Schrader, Waltrip and Earnhardt all had to start at the back of the field but almost immediately all three started charging through the field. Within a lap all three Cup drivers were three-wide with each as they split and drove through the ARCA and West drivers. This was Hershel McGriff's 200th Winston West start 'in the current era' according to the broadcast and he sort of got to celebrate it with a win. According to the broadcast this was ESPN's first-ever coverage of a race at Texas World Speedway. I'll amend my first post on this thread to this being the last major race at Texas World Speedway on the oval, IMSA ran on the infield road course here in 1995 and 1996 but since then its been all minor series and club races. 9. It was extremely wet around the area that weekend. 10. 83andJoe posted: 03.01.2013 - 8:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #7 sponsor: Target Expediting Ford 11. 83andJoe posted: 03.01.2013 - 8:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #11 sponsor: Nu-Power/Kanawha 12. 83andJoe posted: 03.01.2013 - 9:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Finishing order corrections: 38th, Page Jones, 33 laps, Accident 39th, Wayne Jacks, 27 laps, Accident 40th, Billy Simmons, 10 laps, Oil pump 13. 83andJoe posted: 03.01.2013 - 10:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #66 owner: Mike Brandt ESPN's coverage of the race listed the Schrader, Waltrip, and Earnhardt cars as 52W, 17W, and 3W, respectively. I think the laps-led numbers may be slightly 'off'. Waltrip took the lead for the first time coming down to take the third caution, and I'm not sure Allen led for the second time - it wasn't remarked. Alex posted: 04.26.2018 - 10:34 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Apparently NASCAR no longer recognizes this race as counting for West Series stats as Hershel is no longer given credit for the victory here nor in 1989 at Sonoma. This is a drastic change in what, for over 60 years, had been NASCAR's official position on this. For Hershel, personally, this drops him from 36 (which until recently was his official West Series win count) to 34 wins. 20.
