Gary Smith spun after contact from Larry Gunselman and hit the rear of Collins' No. 28, damaging both cars. 5. nascar_vd / racing-reference.info posted: 01.03.2016 - 11:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Note: we have the complete starting grid for this race and for some others race of this 1997 West season. 6. rm posted: 01.01.2018 - 10:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) First caution - debris turn 3 Second caution - 25, 28, 37, 38, 45 accident turn 2/halftime break Third caution - 12, 26 accident turn 1 Fourth caution - 43 spun turn 2 Fifth caution - 00, 07, 3, 7, 9, 26, 37, 45, 95 accident turn 4 (red flag. At least one or two more cars that both ESPN and I cannot identify were involved in this melee. That's half of the field left running that was involved!) Sixth caution - 12 stopped turn 1 Seventh caution - 07, 3 spun turn 1 7 sponsor - Firebird/Cinema Vehicle Services 9 sponsor - ADL/Blachley Racing 7 owner - Raymond Claridge So that second/third caution. The first accident happens and they call that the halftime break. Then the second accident happens off of the restart - I believe that's what the lap 78 caution is, that's also what ESPN said. Maybe the first accident is a caution for no laps occurring on lap 76? Not sure how to score that. I also believe that would give us 7 cautions total but I would hate to suggest a deviation from NASCAR's record especially in 1997. I trust their official records much more than say ASA or USAR, even for a standalone West series race 20 years ago. Wade is a DNF due to suspension damage even though he was involved in the wreck because he drove up on the side of another car and about flipped over! Just about everyone in this race was involved in a crash or had a mechanical failure. Joe Bean, a racing veteran of many forms and series, said this was the weirdest race he'd ever competed in. Not how many teams wanted to start the 1997 season! Gary Smith passed the leaders avoiding the seventh caution to get back on the lead lap and about won the race. Not bad. 7.
