I believe this was the only time that a NASCAR West Series race was shown on network television. Several hard crashes were in this race too. Darrel Krentz pounded the wall with the rear end of his black #33 Ford, resulting in a scary fuel tank fire, but was uninjured. It took the rescue crews a while to get there too, if I recall. Ron Peterson also smacked the wall coming off turn two late in the race and was knocked unconscious, and got a concussion, but suffered no other serious injuries. 4. The car Darrel Krentz crashed out was rather historic, the old Ford was the car A.J. Foyt made his last Cup start in at the 1994 Brickyard 400. The owners had bought it and used it as a show car for two years before deciding to race it and finishing 8th the previous year at Las Vegas using it. The announcers said Krentz apparently told them he 'wouldn't put a scratch on it' before this race and the car's firey but memorable exit. 10. The 91 team failed to qualify for the Winston Cup race (a common refrain that season), and so after second-round qualifying, just before the West cars were to start lining up on pit road, they decided that they would at least try to get SOMETHING out of their trip to California and rolled straight from the Cup DNQ line to tag the back of the West grid - and he very nearly won the thing. 14. 48johnsonfan posted: 10.12.2020 - 7:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Fun Fact: I was turning one year old when this race was run. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
