Schrader's #52 actually caught fire at point, forcing him to pit and jump out. Once the fire was extinguished, Schrader got back in and finished the race. 2. Schrader was four laps down after his pit fire, he worked his way back up into the lead until Waltrip moved him with the bumper with ten to go. 4. nascar_vd / racing-reference.info posted: 10.27.2015 - 11:22 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Drivers Standings after this race (top10): 1) Butch Gilliland = 1570 points 2) Gary Smith = 1507 3) Sean Woodside = 1491 4) Scott Gaylord = 1309 5) Larry Gunselman = 1287 6) Kevin Culver = 1267 7) Bill McAnally = 1208 8) Dan Obrist = 1115 9) John Kinder = 1058 10) St. James Davis = 1014 Rookie standings: 1) Gary Smith = 84 points 2) Sean Woodside = 79 3) Kevin Culver = 73 4) Kenny Smith = 33 5) Billy Kann = 31 6) Chuck Pruett = 27 Manufacturer standings: 1) Ford = 62 points (4 wins) 1) Chevrolet = 62(4 wins) 3) Pontiac = 47 (1 win) 4) Buick = 18 5. Quirkier racer/monkey guy St. James Davis. Veteran H.B. Bailey in one of his last races. One of the last races ever for some guy named Pappy Pryor. One of the first races of record for future Cup regular David Gilliland. An interesting, odd mix of drivers. 9. Stroppe was only small time in NASCAR at this point, but in the 50's and 60's fielded cars for some pretty impressive drivers and had 5 Grand National (Cup) wins to his credit. 10. So, that's pretty odd, too. 11. Waltrip drove a self-owned yellow-and-white #55 Ford T-Bird to victory with Sealy Furniture backing in this race. Waltrip was trying to get a Cup team off the ground at this time, having had Joe Ruttman attempt the Winston Open with a #55 Ford only to have the effort end in a qualifying crash. I'd wager his entry here in a #55 may have been connected to that. Ultimately the #55 team didn't come together at that level in 1997 although Waltrip's team would eventually make the transition to Cup. 12.
