Kenny Irwin, Jr. ran this race with Robert Yates Racing in preperation for taking over the famous Texaco/Havoline #28 full-time in 1998, his first race in the #28 in any series. Irwin was fast and led much of the early part of this race before crashing out. While his car here was a Texaco/Havoline #28 the T-Bird very clearly came from Dale Jarrett's #88 team as it was painted in DJ's famous red, white, and blue Ford Quality Care colors instead of the famous Havoline black look. With Irwin at RYR the team's 1997 driver Ernie Irvan was free to move over and do a race with his 1998 team, Nelson Bowers' MB2 effort. Weirdly in a TV interview Irvan said this was the first time he raced a Pontiac although he previously drove them in Cup for D.K. Ulrich back in the 1980s, he probably just meant a modern Pontiac or something. 6. He and Sean Woodside both came into the final race with a shot at the title with Gilliland maintaining his lead after his rival had issues. 7. Given Skinner, a Cup regular by this time, is originally from Southern California I'm surprised he didn't race in this series more on his way up the ladder. 9. I was born & lived in SoCal for 30+ years and never heard of Mike until he started running the RCR Racing truck. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
