This was drifting expert Manabu Orido's NASCAR debut and despite the DNF
it was still his best finish.

But yeah as the above link shows what a fire! Thank goodness events like
that were rare in NASCAR at the time and basically unheard of now. (The
video also has some great footage of the NASCAR West points race at
Montegi later in the year).

The link in the second comment no longer works, but I think this is the
same video here. This race is covered in the first ~3 minutes or so.
Fair warning, while not necessarily super graphic, it is pretty intense
and does show a couple of the crew members on fire up close:

Two crew members were burned - Donnie Butts and David Valadez. Butts
escaped by only having to spend a couple nights in a local hospital, but
Valadez was far more seriously injured and spent a lengthy amount of
time in the ICU's burn unit. He spent over a month in the hospital and
survived both a heart attack & pneumonia during that time.

Second caution - 05, 07, 15, 18, 44, 50, 53, 61 accident turns 3/4
Third caution - 65 flat tire
Eighth caution - 05, 3, 16, 23 accident turn 4
