1st ever NASCAR points race held outside North America

This race was a replacement for the NASCAR Cup series exhibitions held
from 1996 to 1998.

Butch Gilliland's last race as a West regular, he'd run just one more

Qualifying very well but crashing out very early, this was the second
and final NASCAR start for drifting ace Manabu Orido

Sammy Potashnick's #65 was a Ford. (His primary car was a Chevy, but he
wrecked it in qualifying and had to lease a Ford from Butch Gilliland's
team as a backup.)

NASCAR Australia drivers Terry Wyhoon and Kim Jane make their only
Winston West starts. Their countryman Neville Lance makes his debut but
would return for three races in 2001.

Like Potashnick Hideo Fukuyama also started this weekend with a
Chevrolet, totaled it in qualifying, and drove a Ford in the actual
race. Fukuyama's Monte Carlo was destroyed he spun in Turn 1 and went
hard into the wall backwards, ripping open the fuel cell and sending the
whole car up in a ball of fire. Thankfully he walked away unhurt.

This race was poorly attended by spectators which combined with the high
cost of travel doomed it to being a one-off oddity. As of 2016 its still
the only points race for any of NASCAR's American series to take place
outside North America.

Note: Brandon Ash #23, Terry Wyhoon #25, Neville Lance #28, Bobby Dotter
#56, Doc Faustina #61 and Ron Barfield #92 use a Ford T-Bird.

Note: Gaughan received the black flag (penalty = last lap on the lead
lap for the restart) on lap 195 for aggressive driving (he put #67 in
the wall).

Pace car: Honda Acura NSX

Note: #98 crash in qualif, #19 (Chevrolet M-C) crash in qualif (+fire),
#65 crash in qualif (Chevrolet M-C).

Allen Bestwick and Michael Waltrip were the commentators. Stephen Cox
was the sole pit road reporter.
