Derek Thorn is the real deal. With a new team I didn't feel quite
comfortable tabbing him as the preseason favorite to win the title, but
now I'm ready to say he is going to be the man to beat this year in the
West.

Derek Thorn wins his first West series pole and then leads all but 9
laps on the way to his first career victory.

This was also the first West series race at Havasu 95 Speedway, one of
only three paved oval race tracks in Arizona. The series has already run
at the other two, Phoenix and Tucson (although they haven't run at the
latter since 2001).

Canadian racer Ron Jay and former Langers Juice series at Irwindale
competitors Austin Dyne and Ryan Partridge make their West series debuts.

Maybe after Mayhew wins the championship this year, some cup owners will
take a look at him.

To date this still remains the only NASCAR K&N West race at Havasu 95
Speedway.
