This will be the 90-year-old McGriff's first West start since 2012 and his first on an oval since his primary retirement after the 2002 seadon. 2. Hershel McGriff will be at the door of the Top10. 8. TeamDCR fan posted: 05.05.2018 - 8:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Qualifying doesn't mean anything. Hershel is just laying low and tricking the kids, but at the first chance, he'll pounce like puma 9. JSPorts posted: 05.05.2018 - 8:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Good luck tonight Hershel! I hope he can keep the car in one piece and bring it home with a decent finish. 10. JSPorts posted: 05.05.2018 - 9:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Based on practice and qualifying, I don't expect him to move up much on speed, but hopefully he can do so if there's attrition. 11. TeamDCR fan posted: 05.05.2018 - 9:07 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) And don't forget he's also playing the National Anthem on his trombone 12. RaceFanX posted: 05.05.2018 - 9:15 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) McGriff said in the week leading up to this race he was more nervous about playing the national anthem before this race on his trombone than he was about his stock car comeback. 13. Great job by Vanderwal to pick up the win and Vanessa Robinson getting a top-5. Hailey Deegan continues to run well with an eight place finish on the lead lap. 17. Mile501 posted: 05.06.2018 - 8:28 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) That's just further proof that NASCAR has forgotten where it came from. I didn't want to give your comment a thumbs down, Alex, but NASCAR definitely deserves a big thumbs down for that one. 20. Chap904 posted: 05.06.2018 - 11:09 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) I just read the ESPN article about him running this race (it made the front page of ESPN.com). First of all great job but funny note, the article says he finished 18th but I didnt realized til I saw the complete results on here that there were only 18 cars running. 21. CBASS posted: 05.06.2018 - 11:41 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sad part is that it's still more cars than last week's K&N race 23. TeamDCR fan posted: 05.06.2018 - 11:48 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) While I'm a little disappointed he didn't run better, I'm still happy Hershel was able to do this. And he finished, so that is something. 24. Mile501 posted: 05.06.2018 - 2:26 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Same. I was hoping he'd have a better showing than that, but who else has gone out and ran a complete short track race at age 90? No one. 25. Running 40 practice laps and then all 100 laps in the race (albeit 6 laps down) is a heck of a way for him to jump back into the sport! 34. RaceFanX posted: 04.09.2020 - 8:06 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) McGriff drove a #04 Toyota in this race making this a rare instance in modern auto racing of a driver racing for an established brand that is younger than he is. McGriff was born in late 1927 which means he would have been nine at the time that Toyota was founded in mid-1937. 35.
