25 cars with 12 of them looking like good cars is another small step in
the right direction. Biggest oval field for a standalone West race in 2
years.

Smallest West fields at Phoenix were 22 in 2003 and 24 in both 2002 and
1981. Looks like we'll hopefully be avoiding that distinction this year.
Also promising that there's 25 cars here just for the West race, with
this track being on the ARCA schedule next year it seems like there's a
good chance the track will draw 30+ for that race.

I know car counts is a point of emphasis with a lot of people, and I
agree seeing races with the entry list in the low teens is bad. I think
the entry list here is perfect. Anyone wanting to see 40 cars show up
for a K&N race needs to go back and watch November 2010 Phoenix race. To
this date it is the only race I have ever left before the finish. It was
a dangerous event because over half of the competitors were very much
unqualified to be out there, and I'm surprised no drivers got hurt.

Despite the lower car count, the series has really come a long way in my
opinion as far as racing quality. I'm certain if I was in Phoenix for
this race today there'd be no leaving early like the debacle of 2010.
I'm actually more excited for this event than the Xfinity race today.

I think any one of those top 12 cars in practice has a good shot at
winning the race. I'd still prefer a few more personally but there's a
very valid point to be made regarding the correlation between car count
and the number of cautions. Max fields in ARCA/K&N have been reduced as
the top three series' fields have been, on the off chance 40 cars ever
show up again they'd probably only start 32 or 36.

Fight for 2nd in points comes down to this. With Kraus just having to
start to lock up the title, Jones, Deegan and Huddleston are all within
5 points of each other. Should be a good battle to decide the runner up
spot in points.

Might actually be a good race. There's at least 12 cars that are capable
of running up front which is way more than usual.

I'm not sure what happened, but the qualifying page for this race is
only showing 15 of the 25 cars. Earlier I'm pretty sure it showed all
25, but it's not now.

Looks like it's displaying just the 15 cars whose qualifying times
stood, with the other cars all having their qualifying laps disallowed
due to failing post-qualifying tech.

Caution at lap 40 for debris on the dogleg. Somebody's spit out a few
hunks of metal, not sure where they came from but I think they're going
to be needing those parts.

Caution again just past lap 50 for the halfway break. Herbst tried his
best to keep up with Mayer but in less than ten laps Mayer had already
opened up a 4 second lead. Looks like a great race for second though.

Third caution at about lap 60, the 18, 36 and 38 have gotten together
and it looks like the 18 is done. Not sure what happened. Red flag out
to clean up some fluid.

Herbst and Gibbs are giving it their all but they just cannot keep up
with Mayer. I think if one of them can manage to stay side-by-side for
more than a straightaway they might be able to make the pass, but we'll
see.

Thanks to a huge push from Ty Gibbs, Herbst takes the lead from Mayer!
Drew Dollar goes for a solo spin from the top five behind them and the
caution's right back out. The whole field was able to avoid Dollar's
spinning car, thankfully.

Mayer gets the jump on the restart and takes the lead back from Herbst.
Ty Majeski briefly battled Mayer for the lead, but has slid back behind
the two Monster-sponsored cars to fourth place.

Drew Dollar tried to line up in his original position despite causing
the caution. He tried to restart three-wide before falling back.

Yet another yellow...debris right where the 18 crashed earlier, just
before the start-finish line. Herbst, Gibbs and Majeski will have
another chance to pass Mayer with a restart upcoming.

Oh boy.

Ty Gibbs made a strong move for the lead off the restart, sending it all
the way down to the pit exit while cutting the dogleg. Predictably, he
couldn't make it stick and washed up into Sam Mayer in the process.
Mayer shot up the track and into the unlucky Ty Majeski, who smacked the
wall hard and looks to be out of the race. A disappointing end for
Majeski for sure, being taken out in an incident he had no control over.
Mayer has somewhat significant damage on the right side of his car, by
the number.

Mayer has been moved back to the lead, and Herbst has been moved back up
to second. Gibbs has been moved back to third place.

Gibbs takes the lead off the restart and is locked in a battle with
Mayer. Herbst has fallen off the pace and looks to no longer be a
factor. The BMR cars of Deegan and Kraus have driven up to the top five
from out of nowhere! 10 to go.

Drew Dollar spins with five to go!

Mayer was trying to track down Gibbs for the lead, but Gibbs kept adding
a tenth or so each passing laps. Those two had already pulled over 5
seconds ahead of third place.

Restarts have been wild here, this next restart could very well be the
craziest. I'd be surprised if it doesn't end with some wrinkled sheetmetal.

Ugly restart, looks like Ty Gibbs maybe tried to back the field up
coming around the final turn and nobody got going very well at all.
Trevor Huddleston spins into the wall and we'll have yet another GWC to
try to settle this.

Corey Heim actually finished 3rd in this one, but due to a pre race
agreement to run the different engine, was credited with a last place
finish. Official series statement below:

"Corey Heim of Chad Bryant Racing crossed the finish line third. He was
credited with a 25th-place finish, however. The No. 22 team, at the
request of NASCAR Competition officials, ran an Illmor engine. NASCAR
officials and the No. 22 agreed the team would be placed last in the
official results regardless of their finish in the running order."

The engine use has nothing to do with post-race tech inspection, like
that post said this was something everyone involved at the track knew
about ahead of the race. Would find it odd though that only one of the
CBR cars was using an Ilmor and the other was using a Yates, if that's
indeed what the case was

Pretty sure the 18 crashed out, though maybe the engine issue led to the
crash. Besides the 17, those are all pretty small teams so I'm not sure
that it's a big deal that there were that many engine failures. Some of
those cars might not have even been running the Yates spec engine, since
those are almost all mid-back of the pack cars.

@52, 54 From the way its worded in #48, the 22 team was going to be 25th
regardless of where they actually finished. NASCAR wanted them to run
the Ilmor engine as some sort of experiment.

The team probably still wanted to go for the victory so the #2 with
Majeski did not run the Ilmor engine..

If anything the #22 should thought of as an unclassified finisher rather
then a "disqualified" one.

Interesting to see then the results of the Ilmor at Bristol earlier in
the year versus the results of the Ilmor here at Phoenix. It was
predictably handicapped at the short track of Bristol due to the added
weight, but the higher horsepower and long on-throttle time here allowed
it to be pretty competitive. Having Heim in the car instead of Joe Graf
obviously helps too.

Last race to watch free on the internet because starting next year all
the K&N, Modified, IMSA, and Motocross races will be on NBCSportsGold.
It's the same concept as ESPN+, scamming people $5 a month to watch events.

Honestly, for the amount of soccer alone that I get ESPN+ was well worth
the purchase, and that doesn't even include all of the other sports that
are available to watch. The amount of content available is more than
worth it.

Apparently the #22 bunch were not aware that their final result would
not be counted in the finishing order. Not sure who the blame falls on
there, if anyone, but considering they weren't counted at Bristol I'm
not sure why they would believe that they'd be counted at Phoenix.

@58 what you consider "scamming" is just a normal offering of a service
for a charge. It's like paying for a newspaper. You want the news? You
gotta pay for it. You want to stream a boatload of racing? You gotta pay
for it.

Plus, $5 a month is an incredible deal. That's a cup of coffee (sorry to
use that expression like everyone else) a month for a huge amount of
racing content. Cup practices/qualifying, ARCA races, IMSA races,
Modified tour, flat track racing (motorcycle), etc.

#62 I agree, if you can't afford $5 for something such as this a month
(Netflix costs a little more and is way more popular in that aspect),
then you're not financially securing yourself properly.

Maybe you should quit tobacco or the greens, something of the sorts. Not
saying you do #58, but if anything's a "scam" that's the proper
accusation. Not some services for entertainment. It is ridiculous to say
ESPN+ is a scam and not Netflix, Hulu Plus, VRV and more. It helps them
stay in business to have customers happily pay to be entertained or to
be an audience.
