So he was on babysitting duty while Annabeth won at Hickory. 3. While NASCAR and IndyCar are racing without crowds the gates were open for this one and it attracted about 800 spectators to the track because the track promoted this event as a "peaceful protest of injustice and inequality everywhere" and a "Unity Rally and Race" instead of just being a stock car event. The event was held in direct defiance of orders from North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper who's office got in touch with the Alamance County Commission and the local sheriff afterward to prevent future races at Ace until more of North Carolina is reopened following social distancing measures to stop the spread of the virus. Protests were taking part across the country at the time of this race, many directed toward law enforcement and focusing on decades of racial inequality and divides that a single post here cannot hope to fully delve into, but the protest angle of this race admittedly seemed directed more at the banning of large public groups. Signs with messages of "Racing for Rights" or ones stating a political affiliation in front of the 2020 Presidential Election could be see in the hands of some spectators. Ace had a prior race in May, with a crowd of 2,000 people on hand, which is why the state was watching them more closely and more direct in their backlash. While holding the race was deemed a misdemeanor track organizers highlighted the speedway's status as a small business that needs income to avoid having to close on a much-more longterm basis than that caused by the virus. Temperature checks were employed at the gate to help lower the risk of a fan with a fever, one common symptom of COVID-19 from those who have symptoms, from attending the race and exposing others in the stands. 5. The two came across the line side-by-side with Millington on the outside just edging Riggs on the inside. The controversy began as Bobby McCarty raced hard with Josh Berry as the pair ran 1-2. With 45 laps to go they came together and it ended with Berry crashing. Berry apparently wasn't pleased with that as he had his car repaired and rejoined the race six laps down and made things very difficult for McCarty when he came up to lap him. Once McCarty got by Berry deliberately dumped him on the front stretch, taking out McCarty in the crash while race organizers parked Berry for the stunt. 6. Although admittedly the media could have fluffed the numbers to make them look worse. 7. RaceFanX posted: 06.09.2020 - 9:29 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) @6 I saw it both ways. A story covering the protest and backlash said 800, a later story I found covering the race said 2,000 (same as an earlier race which is where I thought confusion was coming into play). Perhaps it is best left blank but they certainly had a good sized crowd at a time it wasn't allowed. 8. thecautionlightnews posted: 06.09.2020 - 11:57 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Noted YouTube Commentator and founder of Media site Scnr, Tim Pool covered this in a video on June 9th, 2020. The comment section had some funny racing puns, like, "The Daytona 500 is the supreme race" which had a reply of "You spelled Indy 500 wrong", and "I Prefer the 24 Hours of Le Mans" with a reply of "Did you mean Bathurst 1000" Most Race fans are only racist when it comes to the races we love to watch every week. 9. The track will need to submit a plan for complying with North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services guidelines in order to reopen. The state went so far as to say anyone who attended the race or any other mass gathering should consider having themselves tested for COVID-19. The local sheriff tried to lobby the track owners not to do this but didn't step in to shut them down either, later saying he wouldn't issue a citation for the violation because other tracks and go-kart circuits in North Carolina also ran without incident that weekend and he didn't appreciate Ace Speedway and his area being singled out on this believing that if the law is going to be applied it needs to be applied to everyone who violated this, not just the this one track. Layne Riggs got asked about his views on the controversy and wisely said "I'm just here to race and not get into politics," although he did say he didn't see this as a major issue. 10.
