On the track Rich Bickle claims the first of his two All Pro victories against a very talented field of drivers. 2. DC: Rick Crawford, #14 John Holliday/Big-10 Tires Chevrolet In the 100-lap undercard event - the Snowflake - the night before the Snowball, Crawford flipped over in a hard crash and was knocked out cold. Crawford was released from the hospital very, very late that night with no apparent head injury (debatable, given his actions in recent years) to sleep in his own (hotel?) bed, but wisely sat out the Snowball and tabbed former winner Mickey Gibbs to take over the #14. After a small fire on the car erupted, Gibbs opted to park the #14 not even a third of the way into the main event. Crawford's roll was par for the course in the preliminary show, which featured 72 caution laps of the 100 total, making it nearly as brutal on the fans in the stands as it was for the drivers. Shrewd tire management nearly won Jeff Purvis the Snowball Derby, figuring out how to run conservatively yet quickly while dominating the race. While many drivers said they felt like they'd used their stuff up after just a handful of green flag laps, Purvis didn't even bother to make his first pit stop from the lead until lap 148 with over 100 green flag laps on his tires. The lengthy green flag run to the checkered flag caught many drivers off-guard though, including Purvis, and instead of logging laps in between frequent caution flags he instead found himself having to navigate lapped traffic, the walking wounded that were the result of a baker's-dozen cautions. Having made his last pit stop just before what would become the final restart of the day, Purvis restarted from shotgun on the field as the last car on the lead lap. Purvis charged up to 2nd, on eventual winner Rich Bickle's coattails, but struggled mightily to navigate traffic and allowed Jason Keller by for 2nd. Keller mounted a charge on Bickle and closed on Bickle's back bumper in the last laps - a little too quickly, though, as Bickle checked up to avoid a lapped car and Keller slammed into the back of him. Keller suffered more damage than Bickle did and quickly faded back, putting Purvis back in the picture. Briefly held up while trying to figure out how to pass Keller's damaged Buick, Purvis reassumed 2nd place but ran out of time to reach Bickle. A caution nearly came out inside of 50 to go when Clay Brown and Dave Mader III made contact, but Brown slid his out-of-control car right onto pit road and got four fresh tires after safely coming to a stop and straightening out his car, dismayed but overall no worse for the wear. 4.
