The final doubleheader was in 1996. 2. rm posted: 08.14.2020 - 3:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Driver/make/laps/status/start: 1. Gill/Pontiac/200/running/10th 2. Young/Olds/1/handling/30th Once again I will apologize in advance for any duplicate starting spots, scanned copies of printed OCR-transcribed paper articles are not the ideal source when aiming for accuracy here and that is the column that seems to be impacted the most. Margin of victory - "<1 second" Cautions: 1st - laps 57-64 2nd - laps 90-99 3rd - laps 153-158 4th - laps 170-177 5th - laps 178-183 Race winner Gill took the lead at halfway and never looked back - until coming out of turn 2 on the final lap, that is. On badly worn tires by that point of the race, Gill got loose on exit and washed up the track very suddenly, forcing a charging Ron Barfield Jr. to ease up to avoid a collision. Barfield rolled out of it to avoid a collision and came across the line right in Gill's tire tracks after being unable to make a move on the other end of the track. Barfield said that while Gill's slide left a hole on the inside line, said hole wasn't quite racecar-sized and that even though the opportunity was there to win the race it would have been far more physical than he'd be comfortable with - if he even completed the pass in the first place. Gill had no problem singing the praises of Barfield and his hard yet clean driving style in his post-race interview. This was Mike Cope's 8th pole of the season, apparently, giving him a better than .500 record in qualifying on the year at that point. Cope matched Gill's sweep of the wins in the doubleheader by sweeping the poles for both events. Junior Niedecken's day ended in unusual fashion when a miscue during a pit stop caused him to leave the pits with several loose lugnuts on one of his wheels. The wheel came off as he merged onto the backstretch, rolling off towards freedom up and over turn 3 - Mobile has only a frontstretch wall - with Niedecken's damaged, unsteerable car slowing following behind. A stewing Niedecken got out when the car eventually stopped and watched the remainder of the race from a safe distance back behind turn 3. 3.
