Mike Cope was originally flagged the winner, but after the race the officials declared that a error had been made by Cope's scorer and that the victory instead went to Jody Ridley after a recount. Cope took it easy in the late going of the race as the race had largely been full of long green flag runs. Cope never bothered to push the issue after what wound up as the last restart of the day, maintaining his lead steadily without using up his tires. When Ridley made his way to Cope's back bumper, Cope let Ridley go right on by as he had been advised by both his team and NASCAR officials, supposedly, that Ridley was one lap down. A bewildered Cope was upset about the late decision, but said he couldn't afford to dwell on it and enter an appeal that would drag on and possibly impact his focus on the championship hunt. The switching of Ridley and Cope on the results sheet almost had major year-end implications: Cope received fewer points for finishing 2nd instead of 1st and eked out the championship by only 4 points over Bobby Gill. 3. Sounds like this was a crazy finish. 4. rm posted: 08.27.2020 - 12:35 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) That would indeed be Goodson at the center of the ordeal with Cope, not Ridley...neither reading comprehension or double-checking work has ever been a strong suit of mine, and especially not at night, oops. Ridley was so much the face of the All-Pro series in the early 90s that he was the center of many a tale of the series' races at the time, that's what I'll blame this one on. I only have a rundown of the "revised" results and some online digging only turned up one brief news blip about the dilemma that was written several days after the race. From what I can tell, the officials' decision to rectify the scoring error may - emphasis on "may" - not have happened until Monday or Tuesday, not directly following the race. 5. rm posted: 03.24.2021 - 7:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Cope's pole speed - 119.386 mph Partial starting grid: 2. Crawford 3. Toby Porter 4. Young 5. Gill 6. Gale (make - Chevy) 7. Gerke (make - Olds) 8. Hall 9. Hal Goodson 10. Bigley Jr. Cope led 179 laps - well, officially, anyway. He was under the assumption that he'd led 201 of 250 laps in a dominating win. Goodson (and Cope) actually completed 249 laps - because of the scoring snafu they unknowingly didn't run the full distance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
