The race started under threatening skies with thunderstorms in the area and a shower early in this race causing a brief red flag. Things cleared up afterward so the race could be run to its scheduled distance. Mike Garvey's first of only two NASCAR All-Pro starts in 1996 sees him land in victory lane for the first time in the series since 1993. He mainly raced in the USAR Hooters Late Model series during this season. His car had a Kyle Petty-inspired paint scheme despite being sponsored by Porter-Cable in this race because his 1996 USAR sponsor in 1996 was Coors Light (who would be on the car for his other 1996 All-Pro start later in the year when the series returned to Nashville for the All-American 400). Matt Hutter was a virtual unknown in NASCAR when he won the pole for this race. He wouldn't be a factor for the win but won the pole again when the series returned to Nashville later in the year. Hutter ultimately faded early, spun to bring out a caution, and retired before halfway but put himself on the radar. 62 drivers attempted to qualify for this race. 2. Series officials dubbed Hansen as the 58 instead of the 53 to avoid confusion, though Hansen still carried a slightly unusual looking 53 on his door anyway. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
