This Kansas road course victory here was his only one that wasn't on a short track. 7. Southwest Tour drivers: 6th - Bob Lyon 20th - Ken Schrader 23rd - Jon Paques 24th - Ron Peterson 26th - Roger Mears Jr. Northwest Tour drivers: 7th - Dirk Piz 9th - Ken Bailey 28th - Mike Kelly 31st - Lee Dailey The announcers expected Ken Schrader to dominate - and rightfully so, given his status as a Cup veteran and five-time road course winner at the time in the late model ranks - but Schrader was never able to establish a comfortable lead over the All-Pro regulars before he crashed out of the race while trying to retake the top spot. Several owner-drivers from the All-Pro ranks acknowledged their lack of competitiveness well ahead of this race as the series had never run a road course before and, outside of this race and the 1997 running, would never turn right otherwise. Those drivers said they couldn't justify the expenses of buying parts that would be better suited to both left and right turns for what would be just a two-time occurrence. Among that group was Tammy Jo Kirk, though not running the preferred road course transmission may have played a large factor in her engine going silent at the halfway mark. Even one of the Northwest invaders, the competitive Jon Paques, went through two transmissions during the race weekend. When Paques slid to a stop well off the racing surface, his car was nearly taken out by a crashing Ron Peterson as Peterson went off in the same corner shortly afterwards. 9.
