It wasn't an easy win as he held off then-young ASA racer Matt Kenseth to do it. This was Anderson's only win of 1996. This was Kenseth's final start in the All-Pro series and his best finish. His son Ross Kenseth would one up him slightly by winning the All-American 400 in 2012. Toby Porter came into this race as the points leader only for his #80 Chevrolet to end up smashing into Brian Ross when the latter blew an engine and out of the race in the first five laps. With Porter gone title rival Mike Cope capitalized, recovering from his own issues to score a top-10, albeit losing his streak of 12 straight top-5s, and take the points lead on his way to the title. This race aired live on TNN, "The Nashville Network." 2. The right side of the #74 Chevrolet was destroyed but his team somehow fixed the car and got him back in the race. His tire bounced over the wall, out of the race track, through a tree, and into the grassy area outside Turn 4. 9. Tim Sauter ran out of gas while leading with Jeff Purvis, who had dominated the race to that point, doing the same a few laps later. Mike Cope raced up to second before he also ran dry and had to pit. Wayne Anderson's strategy was better as he took the lead after these issues and never looked back on the way to his first All-Pro victory. 10. Hamilton did not have an easy go of it as he almost failed to qualify, sneaking in through the last chance race, and had to start shotgun on field. While he'd move up through the field on race day a mechanical problem ultimately put him on the sidelines. Two weeks after this race Hamilton would win his first career Cup race at Phoenix driving Richard Petty's famous #43. 11. Driving a red-and-blue #42 Coors Light Chevrolet, painted identically to Kyle Petty's NASCAR Winston Cup car, Garvey was again a frontrunner throughout the first half of the race and led a nice chunk of the race's middle stages. Any hopes of a second straight Nashville win though were crushed like an old beer can when a spin by Tony Walls set off a multi-car crash that collected several other cars including Garvey, fellow contender Freddie Query, and John Crow. The whole front end of Garvey's Chevy was crushed leading his team to just pull off all the front fiberglass to get him back in the race. The quick repair wouldn't hold up though and both Garvey and Query retired from the race not long afterward. Walls set off the melee but escaped serious damage and rallied back to score a top-10 finish; a nice comeback after he broke while leading the 400 in 1995. 12.
