Reigning series champion Mike Cope returns for his first race of 1997 and wins the pole. The defending champ then led over half the race on his way to a top-10 finish. Cope was focusing on running some races in the Craftsman Truck Series during this season. ESPN televised this race. 2. There's a chance that he could get wins as an owner with Timmy at Daytona or Talladega. 7. It was run as the opening half of a doubleheader that night at Bristol along with the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. 8.
