This race was bizarrely combined with NWS (Northwest Series) in that some NWS drivers were guaranteed a spot in this race even though it only counted toward SES results. 2. Both the late models and the Trucks switched to one of Heartland Park's longer layouts for this year. 4. rm posted: 06.24.2018 - 11:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Christian won $12,175 Cadman's DNF reason: engine 5. Of the trio Fultz adapted the best as led nine laps en route to a runner-up finish. Goodson was a lap down but still claimed a top-10 while Reuitimann salvaged a top-15 despite some issues. Ron Young's seventh place run allowed him to pass Reutimann and take third in the standings. 6. (It's not online yet to my knowledge though while the 1996 race is) This was Steven Christian's first win of the year. It was the first of two wins for him in 1997 and the only one of his six All Pro wins that came on a road course. Christian thanked the BellSouth crew and crew chief Sammy Shumate for their work noting some work on the shifter and effort to stretch fuel mileage paid off with a win. NASCAR used group qualifying for this race, an especially rare decision in this era. The cars went out to qualify in 11 groups of four. 7. He beat several Cup winners. 9. rm posted: 03.10.2020 - 7:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Found new info that suggests Hamilton (Senior) wound up leading for a total of 15 laps and Biffle leading for 10. Combined with the totals from Fultz and Christian, that would add up to a nice even 60 and square that category away. As for when the lead changed hands or the total number of lead changes, I have yet to come across anything that offers a comprehensive breakdown of those statistics, or any other missing tidbits from this event. 10. rm posted: 09.07.2020 - 7:41 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) 00 status - transmission 28 status - panhard bar 00 sponsor - Jiffy Lube 28 owner - Ron Hall The high at Topeka was 103 degrees this day, apparently, as part of a sweltering heat wave that struck the midwest that weekend. The Truck race the next day featured similarly brutal temperatures, and the inaugural Busch race at Gateway was plagued by track surface issues exacerbated by the extreme heat. 11. Quite an interesting mix of racers in the field. Hopefully the video of the 1992 ARCA race from here surfaces next, I kick myself for not grabbing that one while I had the chance too. Tony Toste, who came home 6th on this day, just finished 17th in the ARCA race at Phoenix this past weekend! 15. He ran second to Bobby Hamilton in the early laps before he went off course and limped back to the pits with a flat tire and some mechanical issues as a result. That may have been repairable under normal circumstances, and he did get back out briefly afterward, but more issues propped up quickly and they lost a few laps and any chance of a good finish. With Hornaday not racing for points in this series he and the team decided not to risk tearing up the car further and parked it. The #12 Chevrolet was a borrowed car with a red paint scheme as opposed to anything resembling Ron's normal blue NAPA entries in this era. 16. RaceFanX posted: 03.16.2021 - 1:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Steven Christian overcame bad luck with good strategy to win this one. He didn't qualify well and before the race his #0 BellSouth Chevrolet hung in gear requiring a pre-race pit stop for repairs. They got it running but he started de facto shotgun on the field as a result. The team had to pit again on lap 3. Deciding to gamble on pit strategy to make up for those issues, crew chief Sammy Shumate called Christian in to pit on lap 15 and left him out to the finish afterward with early cautions preventing them from loosing ground. With enough fuel to make it to the finish when everyone else had to pit the stops cycled through to put Christian in the top spot. He never relinquished it after he got there en route to a big win by a wide margin on national TV. 17.
