Schrader maneuvered past Duke Hoenshell in the closing laps then pulled away for the win. 2. Calczynski gave it everything he had, even leading a few laps in the second half of the race, but a transmission failure doomed his hopes. Chase meanwhile ran a steady race and came home fifth, that would have been good enough to lock up the title no matter what Calczynski had done. Jim Lee handed his #6 Chevrolet over to West Coast veteran Jimmy Insolo on lap two. Insolo proceeded to then go out and finish third with his borrowed race car. Chevrolet won 16 of 17 Southwest Tour races in 1987 and claimed the manufacturers championship. Their lone loss was this one to Winston Cup racer Ken Schrader in his Ford...and Schrader was making the switch to Chevrolet in 1988 anyway. 3. rm posted: 04.22.2020 - 10:09 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Having run the ARCA race at DuQuoin last year, Ken Schrader maintains his status as the last Riverside winner that is still active in a stock car racing series covered on this site (as of 2019). As if you needed another reason to consider Schrader a damn legend! As far as I could tell, the only other active drivers that even raced at Riverside are Morgan Shepherd and Sterling Marlin, and I'm pretty sure Shepherd is all but committed to running Landon Cassill in his car instead of himself in 2020. Marlin has run CRA at the Nashville Fairgrounds, and while that series isn't covered on this site, there are a few CARS tour races on the site that have been co-sanctioned with the CRA. 4. He gambled he could make it on fuel without a second stop and it paid off with a win. Hoenshell gave the Cup racer everything he had, making up a three second gap on the final lap to pressure Schrader before skidding sideways a bit and having to settle for second. Troy Beebe was a factory for the win in this one until the Taco Bell #93 Camaro broke a shock absorber with two laps to go. He limped it home ninth afterward. Mike Hood qualified near the front but destroyed his car in a lap 2 crash.
