Dale Earnhardt makes his lone NASCAR Southwest Tour start but the
Intimidator crashes out late in the race.

Roman Calczynski and Troy Beebe both came into this race with a shot at
the championship although Calczynski had a big lead so Beebe needed to
finish at least 10 spots in front of him. Calczynski's runner-up finish
assured that wouldn't happen as he won his only title.

This race was on the undercard for the Winston Cup series' first race at
Phoenix the next day, thus the NASCAR Cup racers in the field. Mike
Alexander had the best run of the Cup guys as he won the pole, contended
for the win, and finished in the top-5 while making his lone Southwest
Tour start. This was Darrell Waltrip's first race in the series.

In a field loaded with Winston Cup talent and future racing stars
part-time Southwest Tour Jim Thirkettle pulls the upset and scores his
only NASCAR Southwest Tour victory. Thirkettle credited his win to good
pit strategy and dedicated his win to his car owner who was recovering
from a major surgery at the time.

This was the only Southwest Tour race for Busch series racer Mike
Alexander. He won the pole and turned in a great top-5 run.

Bob Jenkins and Ned Jarrett were the commentators. Dr. Dick Berggren and
Dr. Jerry Punch were the pit road reporters.
