Calczynski's runner-up finish assured that wouldn't happen as he won his only title. This race was on the undercard for the Winston Cup series' first race at Phoenix the next day, thus the NASCAR Cup racers in the field. Mike Alexander had the best run of the Cup guys as he won the pole, contended for the win, and finished in the top-5 while making his lone Southwest Tour start. This was Darrell Waltrip's first race in the series. 4.
