Chuck Pittenger, despite going into this race second in points, was so
slow in qualifying that he had to run a last-chance heat. During this
heat, he passed Rich DeLong, who, unpleased, went straight on in turn
three and guided himself and Pittenger into the wall. DeLong's car
flipped onto its side, coming to a stop atop the barrier and caught
fire, which spread to Pittenger's car. Neither were injured, but
Pittenger was forced to buy out Bob Campanella's ride, which he start
and parked. I can't find any info about DeLong being punished, but
officials were reportedly not happy.
