Short track legend and then-NASCAR Winston Cup "rookie" Dick Trickle makes his NASCAR Southwest Tour debut driving a Camaro with his traditional #99 and his Cup sponsor Miller High Life on the sides although the field ended up looking more at his back bumper. The race came down to battle between the visiting Trickle and series regular Mike Chase with the polesitting Californian hounding Wisconsin's favorite son with all he had. The final lap came down to a drag race to the line with Trickle's Chevy nipping Chase's Buick by just 0.016 of a second to score the victory in his series debut. Dan Press finished fourth as he concluded his championship-winning season. This race was a NASCAR Winston Cup undercard and scheduled late in the season so that led to a lot of visiting talent in the starting lineup. While Trickle got to have a brew in victory lane fellow Cup stars Darrell Waltrip and Ken Schrader had a tougher go as both fell out early with mechanical problems in their Camaros. ASA champion and part-time Cup racer Butch Miller also saw his #52 sidelined by an early crash. Garrett Evans was a regular in the NASCAR Northwest Tour and similarly invaded the field for this one but had a solid run. He led a nice chunk of the race before crashing out of the lead after his Pontiac blew a tire in Turn 2. He walked away but done for the day. Ken Pedersen qualified well but saw his day end with a blown engine on lap 73. Mark Bold and Roy Testa were running right behind him, hit the oil Pedersen laid down on the track, and crashed together as a result. 2. He'd contine racing in this series and the Northwest Tour off and on through 1994 before dabbling in high levels. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
