The NASCAR Southwest Tour visits California's Stockton 99 Speedway but
the visiting drivers had to play second fiddle to the local track
champions in this one. Local hero John Brazil claimed his only Southwest
Tour pole and led the opening laps but fellow track champion Steve
Johnson passed him early on and led the rest of the way home to claim
the win. This would be Johnson's only Southwest Tour triumph, in fact he
never led a race in the series again.

This was only Johnson's sixth Southwest Tour start. It was also Brazil's
penultimate Southwest Tour start and despite being sidelined by an
engine failure it was his career-best finish. He'd match his 15th in his
last start about two years later.
