Foyt's last race in a non-major series and arguably his last race where he was really a threat to win. he was very quick in practice, wrecked in qualifying trying to get the pole, then came from 44 to 6th in the 50 lap race. It was definitely the A.J. of old! 2. This race was televised by TNN as part of its "American Sports Cavalcade" motorsports program. 3. rm posted: 01.02.2018 - 12:15 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Pretty sure that time of race is inaccurate - that had to be green flag laps only with all the cautions. However, caution laps did not count. First caution - lap 2 - 15, 80 accident backstretch Second caution - lap 6 - 20, 28, 92 accident frontstretch Third caution - lap 9 - 3, 10, 28, 44, 64 accident frontstretch (red flag) Fourth caution - lap 20 - 2, 8 accident turn 3 Fifth caution - lap 38 - 3, 60 accident turn 4 Sixth caution - lap 43 - 26 oil on track Seventh caution - lap 45 - 54 accident turn 1 4. It would remain a part of the championship through the end of the series in 2006. 5. McGriff and the team figured that was probably worth it anyway because of the big size of the Phoenix mile and figured they could make up the difference by pitting to change tires under the yellows. Their plan was done in by the fact the Copper World Classic organizers had changed the rules to prohibit changing non-flat tires during this race. Any strategy McGriff had went out the window early on anyway as a blown motor quickly put the blue #04 on the sidelines and he had to settle for last place. 6.
