With the hype of the Copper World Classic in the rear view mirror Rick
Carelli takes command in the championship standings with this win at
Mesa Marin. He took the lead early from Bakersfield's own Gary Collins
and then never surrendered it again as he held off polesitter Bryan
Germone for the win. Eventual title rival Ron Hornaday, Jr. started near
the front but had serious issues resulting in a finish well down the
running order.

Former USAC Silver Crown champion Chuck Gurney was a surprise entrant in
this one. He crashed out of his only NASCAR appearance.

The Southwest Tour would run 16 races in 1992 with four of them, a full
quarter of the schedule, being run here at Mesa Marin.
