He took the lead early from Bakersfield's own Gary Collins and then never surrendered it again as he held off polesitter Bryan Germone for the win. Eventual title rival Ron Hornaday, Jr. started near the front but had serious issues resulting in a finish well down the running order. Former USAC Silver Crown champion Chuck Gurney was a surprise entrant in this one. He crashed out of his only NASCAR appearance.
