Fittingly its Denver's own Rick Carelli who would claim the win on his home track track. Defending series champion Carelli bested his future NASCAR Truck Series rival Ron Hornaday, Jr. to get the win on a green-white-checker finish. This race was held on an off weekend for the NASCAR Winston Cup series so the promoters no doubt got out some nice financial carrots to get a few big name NASCAR drivers in the field for this one although it would be a mixed night for them. Michael Waltrip had the best night as his Southwest Tour debut saw him qualify and run at the front en route to a top-5. Derrick Cope's only Southwest Tour outing would be a little rougher, he started last and no doubt had issues en route to finishing four laps down. Chad Little's series debut would be the roughest of all though as he wrecked in the opening laps, finishing dead last after starting near the front. Carelli and Hornaday's title opponent Jon Paques started first in this one and led the opening laps. It would however be a short race for him as blown engine put him on the sidelines not long after Hornaday took the lead from him. 2. It would give the schedule more uniqueness, which I think is needed (there are going to be 16 triple header weekends next year, I believe.) 3. He finished a strong third. Bruce Yackey, another Colorado driver, also scores a top-10 in his debut and lone start of the season as did the late Jeff Seidler doing the same. There was a strong Colorado contingent in the field for this one as Bob Hackenberg and Rick Fierro both made their series debuts, with this as Fierro's only start, while Mike Opperman returned to the tour for the first time in four years only to drop out before halfway. Safe to say the Colorado's Best Chevrolet Dealers 100 featured many of Colorado's Best stock car racers of the era. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
