Darrell Waltrip scores his best Southwest Tour finish, second, in his final start in the series. DW ran the series' fall companion race at Phoenix from the Cup series' debut at the track in 1988 through 1992. Rick Crawford crosses over from the NASCAR Southeast Tour (All-Pro) and claims a third place finish. It would be his best out west and he would match it three times. 2. Ron Hornaday, Jr. came into this race with a solid 77-point lead but his future Truck series opposition Doug George and Rick Carelli were both still within possible striking distance... Hollywood couldn't possibly script how the title fight turned out as early in the race an exhaust pipe came off one car and ended up going through Hornaday's windshield, hitting him and breaking a bone in his arm. Remarkably despite the serious injury he only took his car behind the wall for repairs instead of parking it. With Hornaday all but out of it that put George in position to win the title but he crashed out with only 10 laps left in the race while running third after another car cut him off. Since both his rivals had issues that now put Carelli in the catbird seat but as noted above the "High Plains Drifter" crashed hard right at the end after blowing a tire setting off a multi-car melee. Hornaday had reentered the race and got through Carelli's crash only to have his #97 Pontiac to lose the transmission right at the finish. With his team's encouragement Hornaday hoped out and despite his injury proceeded to push his Pontiac across the finish line Dan Gurney-style to complete the race, he hadn't had a DNF all year and didn't want to get one right at the end. When all the dust settled Hornaday's heroic effort was rewarded as he won his first NASCAR championship. Ironically almost two decades after the trio fought each other for a title here Hornaday, Carelli, and George all ended up working together at Kevin Harvick Incorporated on the same NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series team in 2010. Hornaday was the driver, George was the crew chief, and Carelli was the general manager. 4. Because the red was displayed, it negated the leaders racing back to the line which is would have happened if a yellow had been displayed. Scoring was reverted to the previous lap minus those who were involved in the crash. Schrader, Waltrip and Crawford were already first through third. Carelli's wreck was instigated by a cut right rear tire coming off the fourth turn. Carelli had the lead in the late going but fell off the pace in the final few laps, likely due to the tire. In any case, Carelli's car hit the turn four wall, came down across the track and collected Bryan Germone. Brett Bell drove into Carelli as well which pretty much blocked the track. 5. rm posted: 07.24.2018 - 8:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) First caution - 09, 26, 33, 46 accident turn 4 Second caution - 07 accident backstretch Third caution - 20, 21, 63 accident turn 1 Fourth caution - Fifth caution - 10, 12, 89, 99 accident backstretch Sixth caution - Seventh caution - 27, 66 accident turns 1/2 Eighth caution - debris frontstretch Ninth caution - Tenth caution - Eleventh caution - 06, 9, 56, 96 accident turn 4 Twelfth caution - 37, 63, 76 accident turn 3 (slipped in oil from the 81 car?) This was the 1991 champ's last race as a Southwest Tour regular before changed to exclusively focus on Winston West for 1993...where the High Plains Drifter would win that series' title. Moments before the wreck Neil Bonnett on the TNN broadcast said that efforts by Hornaday's team to fix the transmission and get him back out were only a moral victory and Hornaday wouldn't be able to do much more. While Ron didn't gain any more spots, he was too far both in front and behind the others, he did win a title. TNN tried to interview Hornaday about the championship after the race only for him to as mentioned earlier ceremonially push his car across the start-finish line to the cheers of the crowd. Once he did that then he did the interview right on the track. 7. You're right, RaceFanX, Hollywood couldn't have scripted this to be any more shocking. How is this not part of mainstream NASCAR folklore? 8. He says the crew told him, it meant nothing to the championship, they just didn't want the DNF. 9.
