This was Eaton's only Southwest Tour win, only the second time he claimed a top-10 in the southern series, and one of just three starts for him in 1996. Former series champion Ron Hornaday, Jr. starts off 1996 with a top-5 run in his only Southwest start of the season. Hornaday was now a regular in the new Truck series and would go on to claim its championship in 1996. 2. rm posted: 07.24.2018 - 10:44 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) There were 4 cautions. The first one occurred on the opening start and took out more than half the field. They decided that the first caution would not count against drivers, so laps didn't start counting until the second caution came out. First caution - 07, 10, 14, 20, 27, 33, 34, 46, 48, 61, 65, 72, 73, 81, 93 accident frontstretch (red flag) Second caution - 7, 9, 10, 12, 20, 34, 48, 65 accident turn 1 Third caution - 2, 28, 55, 87 accident backstretch Fourth caution - 19, 34, 55 accident turn 4 Rick Crawford was in the 14 There were 30 DNQs! Ron Eaton won the pole. Harvick started first due to the inversion. So, after 18 laps, we had yet to see a full lap of green flag racing and 21 of the 26 starters were already involved in a crash. 5 cars had been involved in the first two crashes. Promptly, on the restart after the backstretch incident, Mike Alsup spun out on the frontstretch. For the sanity of all persons involved, no yellow waved. It was all for naught as just a couple laps after that, Doug McCoun dumped Kevin Harvick in turn 4. Mark Wilson evaded the spinning Harvick by inches - no, millimeters! - and Harvick looked to be okay. That was, of course, up until he hit the 19 of Tony Toste, who happened to be stopped in the infield off of turn 4 for no apparent reason. So wouldn't you guess that the last 100+ laps of this race ran green? Because that's exactly what happened. Brian Germonne and Chris Trickle were the only drivers that didn't sniff trouble all day. 3.
