Just seven days after this race Trickle was shot in the head in a drive by shooting while driving to play tennis with a friend. The shooting left Trickle in a coma from which he never fully came out of before dying 13 months later in March 1998. The shooting remains unsolved. 2. Frank Maronski, Jr. crashed hard early in this one when his red #7 Chevy clipped the outside wall frontstretch then had a serious problem (either a flat tire or a hung throttle) that set him up for a head-on blast into the Turn 1 wall. Maronski was okay afterward but his Monte Carlo late model certainly wasn't. 3. RaceFanX posted: 03.09.2019 - 8:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsor: #52 Ken Schrader- Skoal / Budweiser (The car had Schrader's red scheme from former NASCAR Winston Cup sponsor Budweiser scheme mixed with a green nose for his new Cup series sponsor Skoal) Rick Carelli wins the NASCAR Southwest Tour race at Phoenix's famous Copper World Classic for the second year in a row, charging through the field from a 14th-place starting spot to lead in just 44 laps. The High Plains Drifter was a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series regular at the time and made only three Southwest Tour starts this season. Ken Schrader led late before Carelli passed him for the win. ASA racer Scott Hansen, who won a Southwest Tour race at Phoenix the prior fall and drove for Schrader at the time, was Schrader's crew chief for this one. More than 70 cars attempted to qualify for this race including 16 Copper World Classic rookies. Only four of the newcomers made the race including 4.
