This was the third year in a row, and fourth in the last five years, that Hansen won this race. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck series had a race at Phoenix the day after this Halloween one so its no surprise a few truck racers with late model tour backgrounds crossover over here. Former Southwest Tour champion Rick Carelli, the winner at Phoenix earlier in the season, had a strong run and finished third while the infamous Rick Crawford, a ringer who often entered these Phoenix races, came home seventh in his final Southwest Tour start. Future Truck series standouts Kurt Busch and Matt Crafton, the latter a series regular in 1997, also both finished in the top-11 on their way up the ladder. 2. rm posted: 07.24.2018 - 9:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) First caution - 34 accident turns 1/2 (violent, fiery crash. He hit so hard the hood wound up wrapped all the way around the car, halfway down the right side) Second caution - 24 slow on track Third caution - 76 accident turn 2 (spun right in front of the leader, Rick Carelli) Fourth caution - 18, 66 accident turn 1 (spun right in front of the leader, Scott Hansen) Fifth caution - 18 accident frontstretch (karma for being the agitator of the previous yellow?) Sixth caution - 20 accident turn 3 (the leader...noticing a trend yet? To the rear - 34 - failed pre-race tech inspection 20 DNF reason - parked (the crew sent him back on the racetrack somehow in worse shape than he was in when he originally crashed, so NASCAR stopped him and did not allow him to continue) 3. He would go on to win the 1998 ROTY title and the series championship after that in 1999, before jumping up to run Trucks and Cup for Roush in 2000. Quite the meteoric rise. 5.
