The organizers of the LA street race hoped that this race would be a forerunner to a Cup race on this track but it would not come to pass. Steve Portenga scores his sixth and final Southwest Tour victory. 2. He ran well but dropped out late in the race. Scenes for a 1999 episode of "Baywatch" were shot during this race weekend. The episode, titled "Baywatch Grand Prix," featured Mark Martin guest starring as himself. The plot had the Baywatch lifeguards race car driver friend visit to take part in this street race only, promising to donate his winning's to group's children's program, only for him to fall sick after an allergic reaction to some food at a party. Needing a driver the show's main lifeguard Mitch Buchannon played by David Hasselhoff volunteered to take the driver's place, having earlier said he did some racing after a training course in college, to try and win this race competing against Martin. In the fictional version of this race Hasselhoff does his best but has to settle for second as Martin wins but Mark then volunteers to donate his winnings to the team so it all works out in the end. Damon Lusk's #40 played the Baywatch team's racer but as shown here he didn't qualify for the real race. 3.
