Oops.) Second caution - 61 accident turn 1 ("resulted in a huge fire" that sent Ledbetter to the hospital with burns, but he insisted on leaving without spending the night and was in the field for the following week's finale at Tucson) Third caution - 0 stalled on track Sixth caution - 73 spun Seventh caution - Eighth caution - To the rear - 52 - late to drivers meeting Relatively unknown northwesterner John Zaretzke pulled off an upset when he came from shotgun on the field to beat a 42-car-strong grid; the field was featuring some of the west coast's strongest late model drivers of the era, future top-three series winners Matt Crafton & Brandon Whitt, and of course the one and only Ken Schrader (an 8-time winner at Phoenix alone!). Zaretzke was well aware that he probably wouldn't have won if the last fifth of the race didn't feature more caution laps than green flag laps, acknowledging that his strong suit had not been long runs at all during the day. Zaretzke missed the start of the drivers meeting because he was late to the track, having spent extended time around Las Vegas when his hauler broke down during the long haul between Washington and Arizona. Zaretzke never made another start in the Southwest tour and only made 5 more in the Northwest ranks, though the series dissolved just a few years after this race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
