It was the fourth of his five wins at Phoenix and his only victory in the series during 2002. Kurt Busch, the Southwest Tour's 1999 champion, returns to the series for the first time since his championship season. He reunited with his old team for one more race in the famous #70 Star Nursery Chevrolet and finished just outside the top-10. This was his final Southwest Tour start. Stanley Smith scores a top-10 in his first Southwest Tour race since 1991. 2. rm posted: 01.30.2019 - 11:25 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) 4 heavy hitters had to make it in via the LCQ - Hemphill, Gilliland, Woodside and Whitt. Raudman's team encountered financial difficulties over the offseason and with the organization's future uncertain, the defending series champion was without a ride for the next season. Hmm... LaMoure joined David Pook as a second driver who had to withdraw from the event due to sustaining a broken neck during the open test. Unlike Pook, LaMoure was not wearing a HANS device, which could have very easily ended in tragedy. Kanke was running away with the 2001 championship, with four wins and two runner-ups in the first seven races heading into Sonoma. Kanke left Sonoma as the point leader anyway and wound up being tied for the most wins in the series at year's end despite running less than half of the races. He also finished 3rd in laps led. The team was firmly behind Kanke and instead of fielding a new driver, they got a head start on their 2002 season. Kanke's triumphant return was extremely short-lived here, and he ended the year with a controversial withdrawal from the second Phoenix race when officials wouldn't let him start his backup car in the race, costing him a 2nd-place finish in the final standings. When NASCAR ended their sanction of the Southwest tour in 2006, Kanke had the most wins over the 21 seasons but never got a championship, something he seemed well on pace for in 2001. Kanke did still compete in the SRL tour, the successor to the Southwest tour, as recently as last year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
