Harvick's victory came in his only start of the season and his penultimate one in the series. This was Robby Gordon's second and final Southwest Tour start. He retired before halfway. 3. Whitt was one of several drivers with big airtime during a crash, as the late models could run up and over the tire barriers surrounding the course with ease. Unfortunately for Whitt, he got airborne after hitting the concrete barriers not far past the start-finish line instead of the softer tire barriers. The cameras missed most of Whitt's wreck in the smoke, but it was a huge hit for sure. With Burney Lamar ducking to pit road before the green flag, Kevin Harvick moved up to the outside front row and quickly got the jump on Todd Souza. Harvick leading the first lap from fourth place isn't nearly as outrageous as it could have been. Harvick's late model, built by his KHI crew and pitted by his RCR boys, was the fastest thing on the track by a wide margin and gapped the next-quickest car, Boris Said's Federated machine, with such ease that the booth wondered if Boris was laying back, as they could find no other explanation for Harvick's dominance. Harvick pulled ahead by 4 seconds on the green-white-checkered and finally ended Jim Inglebright's 3-year reign of terror at Sonoma, one year after the Cup invaders collectively failed miserably at attempting to snap Inglebright's streak. From the broadcast booth, Phil Parsons brought up a controversial Robby Gordon/Kevin Harvick Sonoma moment while Harvick was shown leading the Southwest field. Just one problem - the "gentlemen's agreement" incident that you're probably thinking of wouldn't happen until the day after this race! Instead, Phil was referring to Harvick trying to unlap himself from Robby in 2001, a move that let not only Harvick get by but also Tony Stewart, who was racing for position with Robby. 5. Unfortunately Gordon would fall to transmission woes, but importantly Ruzbarsky would live to race another day. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
