Eric Holmes beats Rip Michels at Altamont by less than a tenth of the
second as the curtain comes down on the NASCAR Southwest Tour in its
final race. Holmes and Michels combined to win the series' last three races.

The Southwest Tour's demise opened the door for the Stockcar Racing
League (SRL) to form a new, non-NASCAR sanctioned series to fill the
void. The SRL Southwest Tour continues today.

Fifth caution - 19, 21, 44 accident

The regional series were ended in an effort by NASCAR to reshuffle the
minor leagues below the Truck Series. They had all been in trouble for
years with dwindling dates and field sizes after the turn of the
century. I believe most drivers and teams either made futile attempts at
moving up to the East or West series or went back down to run weekly at
their local tracks, which saw increased purses if the tracks were
NASCAR-sanctioned (seems like that's where the regional series $$ went,
after doing a lot of research).

Actually, this was NOT the final Southwest Series race. They raced at
Phoenix in November though it appears it was not for points but was
indeed the 9th race of the year and the sendoff for the Southwest
Series. If anyone is interested, more info can be found here:

@4, I can confirm that the final race at Phoenix that you referenced was
a non-points race.
