That's the most first-timers in 500 history. 11. oldschoolracing519 posted: 07.16.2017 - 3:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Lap Leaders Laps Leader 1â?"65 Ralph DePalma 66â?"74 Louis Chevrolet 75â?"102 Ralph DePalma 103â?"200 Howdy Wilcox to answer the question, back then to win any prize money in this event you must complete all 500 miles. there was one year previous where the guy who finished 10th finished in over 8 hours, well after everyone else had gone home, he had done it because the year before he had finished in the top 10 but didnt complete all the laps so got 0 $$ for his effort 12. Reynolds was a few months shy of 60 years old when he entered this race. If DNQ data for this event ever gets added, Reynolds would be the first driver on RR to have been alive during the American Civil War and the oldest driver on the site by far (being born nearly 160 years ago). 13. There was some pre-race drama for the #3 Peugeot team as Leo Banks was drafted in on the day of the race to serve as Wilcox' riding mechanic when his intended passenger Maurice Becker was forced to quit by his family. This was Wilcox's third and final Champ Car win and his first in two and a half years. It was his second win at the Brickyard, he won a 100-mile race here back in 1910. The first half of the race saw Ralph DePalma in control as he sought a second Indy 500 win. Tire trouble just past halfway forced him into the pits for repairs and doomed his hopes of victory, he lost many laps as Wilcox zoomed by and led the rest of the way en route to victory lane. Wilcox' victory was the first at Indianapolis for a car using Goodyear tires. The company would go on to win the "Greatest Spectacle in Motorsports" 29 times to date but this would remain their only win here for almost 50 years. 18.
