Milton was relieved about about 48 laps just past halfway by Howdy Wilcox, an earlier leader of the race who had already dropped out, and spend his time out of the car bandaging up his blistered hands. He retook the wheel of the HCS Motor Miller with 49 laps to go and raced on to victory. This would be Milton's final win at Indianapolis. Mercedes-Benz made its first appearance at the Indianapolis 500 with this race as it entered a trio of supercharged race cars, the first supercharged entries ever at Indy. Max Sailer posted a top-10 run at the wheel of one of them with teammate Christian Werner not far behind in 11th while Christian Lautenschlager crashed out early. None of three German racers ever ran the 500 again. The format of the Indy 500 was changed before this race to make the use of a riding mechanic optional, it would remain this way though 1929. Lautenschlager's Mercedes was the only car in this race that had one. 4. Jolly Mean Giant posted: 05.30.2018 - 12:38 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Qualifying speeds: 1. Tommy Milton, 108.170 MPH 2.
