In 1915 the race ended at lap 120 however that was how it was scheduled. 2. Jolly Mean Giant posted: 03.21.2017 - 10:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Herbert Jones died from injuries suffered in a qualifying accident prior to the race when his car hit the inside wall off the fourth turn, overturned, and slid back up into the outside wall. Jones was initially able to crawl out from his wrecked machine, but collapsed afterwards. He fractured his skull in the accident and died from his injuries the next day. Herbert was the youngest driver entered at Indy in 1926-he was only 22. John Duff drove the repaired Elcar Special Jones intended to race in the 500 itself, coming from last place on the starting grid to earn a top 10 finish at the time the race was ended by rain. 6.
