They both lost their lives when the ocean liner SS Vestris sank, along with 109 other people. 2. Have to admit, though: that was one hell of a supercharger while it lasted. 3. webmaster posted: 05.10.2011 - 8:03 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Some sources have Snowberger leading 13 laps rather than 11. The laps Snowberger led occurred when he was driving car #39 in relief of Jimmy Gleason. 4. L. Corum (in the #17), and Buddy Marr (in the #35) also successfully qualified for the 1928 500 as well. However, all three of their cars were wrecked in practice runs prior to the race (Buddy Marr's #35 was being driven by future Indy veteran Chet Miller when it was wrecked, Miller was entered as a relief driver for Marr). Their cars were all too badly damaged to be repaired in time for the race, so they were withdrawn and were not credited with having competed in the race. This would've been Corum's 5th 500 start, Baumann's 2nd (and last) start, and Marr's first and only start in the race had they been able to compete. 7. Corum, and Buddy Marr should be listed as WD as they all initially qualified for the race, and 32 cars were intended to take the green flag. These three drivers all withdrew after crashes in practice prior to the race. Info on DNQ drivers: Buddy Marr: Nationality: American Hometown: Augusta, Maine Born: May 6, 1896 Died: Jan. 13, 1996 8. Henry Kohlert, 93.545 MPH Wilbur Shaw actually qualified on the morning of the race in place of Pete DePaolo after he'd been injured in an accident earlier in the month. Jim Hill also attempted to qualify on race morning (which, assuming the three withdrawn cars hadn't had to do so, would've made him the 33rd starter), but didn't complete his run and missed the cut. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
