Jolly Mean Giant posted: 03.21.2017 - 10:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bill Spence was fatally injured early in this race when his car spun in the second turn and hit the inside wall, overturning and throwing him out onto the track. Spence was already several laps behind after suffering spark plug trouble in the opening laps and was trying to make up for lost time. Bill fractured his skull when he was thrown from the car, and died on the way to the hospital. His death was not announced until after the race in the newspapers. Phil Pardee initially qualified for the race in car #44, but crashed in a Carburation Day practice session right before the 500 and his car was too badly damaged to race. As such, Pardee's team withdrew, and Bill Lindau, the first alternate (he had been bumped out on the last day of qualifying by Cliff Bergere), was elevated into the field to take his place. 7.
