Very little Americans, a whole bunch of foreign people, like in F1. 2. The first incident happened on May 25th. Indy newcomer Bennie Benefiel slammed into the inside wall, shedding a wheel from his car, then slid up the track in turn 1 and vaulted over the outside retaining barrier. Benefiel's car fell twenty feet to the ground, and impacted a pair of trees before coming to rest against another tree. Bennie survived, but he was seriously injured and never came back to the speedway. His riding mechanic, Harry Cox, died at the scene from his injuries, which included a broken neck. The second fatal accident happened on May 27th. Welsh-born M. C. Jones was trying to make his second Indy 500 start, and first since 1925. Jones was making a practice run that morning when he lost control in the first turn and jumped the outside wall. Jones and his riding mechanic Harold Gray were both hurled from the car in the crash. Gray survived with a broken arm and internal injuries; however, M. C. was critically injured in the crash and died in the hospital about six hours later. This was the first attempt at the 500 for future three-time Indy winner (twice as the driver, once as a co-driver) Mauri Rose, but his first attempt did not go very well as he hit the wall in practice on May 20th, a day before qualifying began. Rose was not hurt, but his car was damaged too badly to qualify. It was the only time in his career he failed to make the 500 field. 5.
