I remember seeing the old AAA results over on ChampCarStats.com, I was wondering if they'd ever make their way to this site. Will be more than happy to help fill in any data on drivers! 3. It wasn't until I had done several years worth of races that I realized William Gardner was Speed Gardner, and so forth with others. By then, though, I had sent in this batch of data. 5. Thank you to Alex and our webmaster for their work assembling all of this pre-war action. 6. Growing up Meyer had always found buttermilk very refreshing and choose to celebrate his win with some, it would be a few years before the idea of something dairy in victory lane at Indy would catch on. 7. The traditional 33-car limit was instituted the following year. Tragically the 1933 500 would go down as the deadliest in race history. This race saw drivers Mark Billman and Les Spangler along with Spangler's riding mechanic Monk Jordan all killed in on-track accidents. Bill Denver and his riding mechanic Bob Hurst also died in a practice crash leading up to this race. This race was the source of a popular bit of Indy lore when Walsenburg, Colorado newspaper The World-Independent accidentally published a story the day after the race declaring that a total unknown racer named "Will Overhead" had come from behind to win the 500. The story happened because the race finished after the Associated Press shut down for the night, leaving the paper's story about the 500 waiting for the final news about who won. The AP sent the paper a message that it would send the winner's name via a telegraph message later saying "Will Overhead Winner of Indianapolis 500" as "overhead" was its word for a sending a telegraph. The editor of the paper mistakenly thought 'Will Overhead' was the winning driver's name leading to the famous gaffe. 8. Sam Palmer in the #41, Leon DeHart in the #55, Doc Williams in the #66, Phil Shafer in the #7 and Danny Day were not fast enough to make the field. (Not sure of the exact order they qualified but Palmer was first alternate so he was 43rd fastest) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
