Johnny Hannon, an inexperienced driver in his first Indy attempt, crashed and went over the wall on his very first lap of practice at speed. Hannon died from his injuries. Clay Weatherly, another inexperienced driver, begged to take over Hannon's ride and qualified the car for the race, but he too went over the wall during the race itself, and also died from his injuries. Adding to that, Stubby Stubblefield and his riding mechanic Leo Whittaker were killed on the same day Hannon died when their car also went over the outside wall. Hannon's and Weatherly's deaths were ultimately what led to Indy instituting rookie tests for new entrants for the 500 in years to come. 3. The "Queen of the Air" came to the speedway fresh off making national news earlier in the month with a non-stop flight from Mexico City to New York City. Notably this made Earhart the first woman ever given an official role, if only a ceremonial one, at the famous race. She would disappear just over two years after this race while flying over the Pacific Ocean in an attempt to fly around the world. 8. Emil Andres in the #56, Dave Evans in the #32, Roy Painter in the #51 and Overton Snell in the #58 were not fast enough to make the field. (Not sure of the exact order they qualified in but Evans was first alternate so he was 34th fastest) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
