Henry Banks was the first driver to ever actually pass an Indy rookie test, but he was unsuccessful in his actual attempt to qualify. 2. Asphalt was added in parts of the turns in 1936 and all of the turns by 1937. In 1938, all but the front straightaway was covered with asphalt until 1962 when only the yard of bricks remained. 5. In 1934 the limit was 45 gallons. It was cut to 42 1/2 in '35 (Cliff Bergere wound up running out in that race), and cut even further to 37 1/2 for this year's race-hence why so many cars wound up completely out of fuel before the end. Shorty Cantlon, in particular, lost out on a third place finish because he exhausted all of his fuel. Louis Meyer drove a conservative pace to easily save enough fuel, and managed to break the race speed record. This was the first year for the Borg-Warner trophy, and Meyer's 1936 win became the first new addition to the trophy. The swig of milk the Indy winner takes in victory lane also originated this year; Meyer drank a swig after winning this race. 8. Henry Banks in the #29, Al Putnam in the #26, Roy Painter in the #34 and Overton Snell in the #24 were not fast enough to make the field. (Not sure of the exact order they qualified in but Putnam was first alternate so he was 34th fastest) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
