A huge race morning fire destroyed a large chunk of the track's southern garages, wiping out George Barringer's car, a rare rear-engined special in this era. Sam Hanks also crashed hard in practice and did not make the start because of an injury. Cliff Bergere somehow managed to complete this race without making a single pit stop on his way to a top-5 finish. Three-time Indy 500 winner Wilbur Shaw competes in his last 500 and his last AAA race period. 3. Mauri Rose started in a different car but retired with a mechanical problem early. After Rose fell out Davis' car owner Lou Moore ordered Davis to come in and hand the car over to Rose, apparently displeased with Floyd's driving. Rose then proceeded to charge through the field and win the race. Rose and Davis were credited as co-Indy 500 winners for this race. Rose went on to win two more 500s later in the 1940s while Davis never ran the race again. This was Davis' only AAA victory. Relief drivers (recovered from the old thread): Car #16-Mauri Rose (Laps 72-200) Car #15-Kelly Petillo (Laps 98-200) Car #45-Louis Durant (Laps 100-138) Car #26-Mel Hansen (Laps 104-187) Car #55-Louis Durant (Laps 154-200) 4. Rex Mays drove for Charles Bowes in this race. Chet Miller was driving for Mike Boyle. All Indy 500s with "M.J. Boyle" should be changed to "Mike Boyle". 5. Chassis was a Miller front-drive (and perhaps should be so noted in the table), altho this was a different chassis from the other Millers, having been originally designed for a Ford flathead V-8 (and thus thoroughly overpowered by the Novi). BTW, the driver Al Miller in this and several other 500s is, as far as I know, no kin to the Harry Miller for whom the various chassis and engines are named. 9. Corum and Joe Boyer are listed for the 1924 Indy 500. https://www.racing-reference.info/race/1924_International_500/UO Just like in that case, perhaps having the race listed twice in the year results page with each winner listed in each field could also be done. https://www.racing-reference.info/season-stats/1924/UO/ The car Rose and Davis won with here would later go on to be the dominant car in NASCAR's short lived Speedway Division. Buck Baker would win three events with it in the two years the series ran and was named the champion in the shortened 1952 season. 11. (Not sure why they didn't get added to the field on race day as Hanks was injured in practice and unable to race and Barringer's car was burnt to a crisp in the garage fire on race morning...) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
