Cantlon swerved to avoid hitting Bill and was successful in doing so, but went hard head on into the outside wall. He died instantly upon impact (apparently from the steering column puncturing his chest). Cantlon's wrecked car was left up against the outside wall for the remainder of the race. Due to the major ASPAR dispute in the lead-up to this race, initially just 28 cars managed to qualify. That was all that were initially going to be allowed, but then AAA and speedway officials decided to open up the track for one hour late in the afternoon the day before the race for last ditch qualifying attempts. Anyone who could beat the minimum speed needed to qualify in that time would be added to the rear of the field; Emil Andres and Mel Hansen were the only two to successfully do so, so they were added to the field. Billy DeVore's crew had anticipated qualifying being re-opened and tried to get the car from the garage to the track in time to make a qualifying attempt (complete with a police escort)...but they arrived just as the hour ended, and thus missed out on the field. 4. Holland did not know this though, and was leading the race in the final laps. Moore held up a pit sign with "E-ZY" so Bill Holland would slow down. Holland thought this meant he had a full lap on the field, and apparently waved at Rose as he drove by to take the lead. After the race when Holland went to victory lane, Rose was already there and Holland realized what had happened. 9. Mercedes-Benz had hidden a lot of its race cars throughout Eastern Europe, in German-occupied areas, during the World War II with this W154 racer, the car Hermann Lang won the 1938 Coppa Ciano in, turning up in Czechoslovakia after the Allies victory. Lee bought the car in England and shipped it to the USA for the race. He found an Offy mechanic who had the engine blueprints for the car and the team was able to get it running although they had some issues and broke a piston, requiring a replacement to be custom made. Nalon was one of the race's fastest qualifiers but the Silver Arrow's shot at winning the all-American 500 classic ended when the replacement piston failed and sent them to the sidelines. Lee's other entry also had an Axis Powers pedigree Ken Fowler took the track in a #47 Alfa Romeo P3 that also was a pre-war Grand Prix entry. The team added extra cowling to the Alfa's suspension parts to make it more aerodynamic. The Alfa ultimately broke an axle and retired on the same lap of the race as the Benz. 10. possum posted: 10.26.2019 - 4:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Owner for both of the Novis should be shown as Lewis Welch. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
