Ralph Hepburn was then given the ride in the #12, and cut a few fast laps in practice, but during a run prior to making his qualifying attempt, Hepburn lost control of the Novi and slammed the outside wall, dying instantly upon impact. The #12 was withdrawn and Chet Miller chose to withdraw from the #54...thus paving the way for Duke Nalon to get the ride. There were several other incidents in practice and qualifying; Pete Romcevich destroyed a car in practice, and the famous Andy Granatelli, in his lone attempt to make the 500 as a driver, wrecked in qualifying and missed out on the field. 3. Jolly Mean Giant posted: 02.19.2016 - 3:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, there is a video on Youtube that shows footage from practice, qualifying, and the race itself that shows a #78 car which is mentioned as being owned by William Schoof...No clue who might have driven that car (the driver isn't named), but it did not qualify. 7. (No car numbers are given for either of them). Chinetti was apparently on track when Ralph Hepburn had his fatal crash-he ultimately did not make a qualifying attempt as he failed his rookie test. Also, Art Hartsfeld still doesn't have a driver page yet; I posted information on him in the first comment. 8. joey2448 posted: 12.04.2016 - 5:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Billy DeVore's No. 19 Offenhauser was a six-wheeled racecar (yes, the Tyrrell ran in F1 during the 70's wasn't the first), featuring four rear wheels in addition to the two in front. Jackie Holmes drove the same car for Pat Clancy the following year. 9. Spider's second run was good enough to bump Shackleford out. 10. I cannot confirm with 100% certainty that Dinsmore drove the car, but considering he drove a #78 for Schoof in other races this year (and had competed in the 500 the year before in a Schoof-owned car) and I also found a photo of him at the track in 1948, most likely Dinsmore was the driver entered for this car. 11. possum posted: 10.26.2019 - 4:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Best year results-wise for the usually ill-fated Novi with pole position and a 3rd place finish (can't really say "best year" given Hepburn's unfortunate death). 12. JollyMeanGiant posted: 03.03.2021 - 1:02 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 38 cars completed full runs during qualifying. Johnny Shackleford in the #48 (34th), Louis Durant in the #29 (35th), Spider Webb in the #72 (36th), Myron Fohr in the #32 (37th), and Ken Fowler in the #42 (38th) were not fast enough to make the field. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
