2-time and defending Indy 500 Bill Vukovich was leading this one when
got involved a chain-reaction crash on lap 57 and went over the wall and
a wild accident as the car flipped over and exploded into flames.
Despite a rescue effort by driver Ed Elisian, Vukovich died in the accident.

Vukovich sadly becomes the first driver to die during in a F1 race.

Fellow racer Manny Ayulo also died in a practice crash leading up to
this event.

Last time the 500 was held under AAA sanction, the race became the
cornerstone of the new USAC Champ Car series the next year when AAA
pulled out of racing following the 1955 Le Mans disaster. It remained a
points-paying World Championship race until 1960 anyway.

Because of the lack of safety at the time, 15 of the 33 starters would
die in racing accidents by 1964. That's mind-boggling to consider.

First Indy 500 starts for Al Herman, Chuck Weyant, Shorty Templeman,
Keith Andrews, Eddie Russo, Ray Crawford, Al Keller, and Johnny Boyd.

Last Indy 500 starts for Walt Faulkner, Cal Niday, Art Cross, Bill
Vukovich, Jack McGrath, and Jerry Hoyt.
